What is the purpose of cookies?

Cookies are of essential importance in providing user-friendly online services, as the most widely used e-commerce features would not be possible without cookies. The interaction between online users and the website is much faster and simpler with the help of cookies. They make it possible for a website to remember an individual’s preferences and experiences, making browsing pages more effective and user-friendly. There are numerous reasons for using cookies. They are used for storing the data on the condition of an individual website (details on the customisation of an individual website), help in the execution of online services (e.g. an online store), help with collecting statistics on users and visits to a website, user’s habits, etc. Cookies help us to assess the effectiveness of our website’s design. You can read the Information Commissioner’s guidelines on the recommended and permitted use of cookies here.

Why we use cookies on our website?

The types of cookies we use on this site:

Session cookies: session cookies are temporary cookies, which are erased when you close your browser (e.g. Chrome or Internet Explorer). These cookies help to improve the quality and usability of our website. For instance, they are able to detect if your browser allows the running of scripts that will help enhance the functionality of the website or they are able to remember your selected preferences (for example the font size or language setting).

Permanent cookies: permanent or persistent cookies remain on your hard drive after you close your browser. Websites use them to store information, for example, your login and password. This means you do not have to login every time you visit a website. Permanent cookies expire after approx. 6 months.

Analytical cookies (set by Google Analytics): analytical cookies collect data about user activity. We use this information to compile reports and to improve the user experience of our site. The cookies collect data anonymously, and the data includes the number of visitors to the website, how the website was accessed and which websites have been visited. Some cookies which are used for this purpose delete themselves automatically when you close your browser. Other cookies may expire 24 months after your last visit to the website. To disable Google Analytics go to: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Third Party cookies (social media plugins): social media sites allow websites to interact with them and to integrate their products – users can share contents with their friends (with features such as the Like-Button, Share-Button, recommend, etc.). The plugin uses cookies in order to identify the members of the social media.
